Savannah, GA (September 28, 2009) - The ultimate volunteer experience may be a partnership between employee, employer and the United Way. It's called a Loaned Associate (LA).

And what exactly is a Loaned Associate? Think of it as a volunteer leadership and development program. For three months, a company lends an employee to United Way to use during its critical annual fundraising campaign. The Loaned Associate is put through a series of training regimes and learns the value of United Way contributions to our community. The Associate then becomes part of United Way's Campaign team that calls on other businesses, helping them organize their workplace giving programs.

What’s in it for the sponsoring companies? Michael C. Traynor, Publisher of Savannah Morning News, said, "It's a really good way to leverage our support beyond just our dollar donation by lending a person to United Way who can help open more doors for monetary support." Mr. Traynor is United Way’s 2009 Loaned Associate Chair.

What's in it for the employee? The Loaned Associate experience provides professional development in public speaking, presentation, project management and organizational and communications skills. More importantly, LA's develop an understanding of the social needs of the community.

Wayne Franklin is one of 19 Loaned Associates.  He is sponsored by the Savannah Morning News, and it’s his second time being a United Way Loaned Associate.  “My experience with United Way’s Loaned Associates program has left me with a deeper sense of our community’s needs and how we can contribute,” Franklin said. “It’s a very rewarding experience, and I’m glad to be back and being part of it again.”

And what’s in it for United Way?  Loaned Associates make up nearly half of the United Way staff during campaign season, which runs from September through November.  The value to United Way is that these individuals literally raise millions of dollars to benefit high quality human service programs in our area.

Companies can support the Loaned Associate program in one of two ways:
1. LOAN one or more employees to serve the United Way campaign full time for 12 weeks during the months of September through November.
2. SPONSOR a Loaned Associate by donating the funds necessary for United Way to hire a quality, temporary employee.
