Savannah, GA (October 3, 2011) - Hands On Savannah, a direct service of United Way of the Coastal Empire, recently united and mobilized hundreds of community-minded volunteers to help area nonprofits. Their annual “Week of Service” event was held from Saturday, September 24th through Saturday, October 1st and included 15 projects across United Way’s four-county service area of Bryan, Chatham, Effingham and Liberty counties. This year’s event marked the beginning of a special initiative by Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation to encourage and support community service among its employees. “We value the passion our employees have for assisting in the communities where they live and work,” said Heidi Fedak, Senior Manager, Social Media and External Communications. “Being part of the Hands On Savannah Week of Service was a tremendous way for us to kick off Gulfstream Community Volunteering Program's (GCVP) first Day of Volunteering. Gulfstream employees have always been active in the community, but this was an opportunity for us to come together as a family and make an even bigger difference. It was just a fantastic experience, and we're looking forward to doing it again in November." Nearly 700 volunteers in all, including more than 270 from Gulfstream alone, turned out at projects across the Coastal Empire; including a landscaping facelift at Hodge Memorial Day Care Center, a United Way funded program whose mission is to provide quality and affordable childcare year-round for low to moderate income parents who are working or in school. A team of Gulfstream and community volunteers planted 17 perennials in a refurbished bed and dug an entirely new bed where an additional 15 plants now highlight the organization's entrance sign. Both beds were topped with rich soil and mulch. “The landscaping project means a great deal to us in terms of improving the overall outside appearance of our childcare facility,” says Melvin Mason, Executive Director. “We all feel better and will take pride in keeping the facility looking good, thanks to all who put this together and participated.” Hands On Savannah’s purpose is to unite and motivate people into active volunteer service that impacts community needs through a variety of short term, hands on projects and also offer long term volunteering opportunities. Hands On Savannah is a member of Hands On Network, the nation’s largest volunteer network. The estimated economic value of the services provided during the 2011 Hands On Savannah Week of Service exceeds $60,000, including volunteer time and funds donated for supplies and equipment.
