Savannah, GA (May 4, 2010) – Members of United Way Women’s Legacy Council are kicking off their heels and getting down to business. Approximately 45 local women, comprised of philanthropists and community leaders, are gearing up for the second annual Give-a-Way project to raise funds for low-income women in our community.  The fundraising drive officially kicks off on Mother’s Day (May 9, 2010) and culminates on Father’s Day (June 20, 2010).  Give-a-Way donations will be used to provide CAT bus passes for women, who do not have a car or other means to reach the services they need.

For many low-income women in our community, finding dependable transportation is a major barrier.  This lack of dependable transportation is often one of the most significant barriers to finding and keeping employment and accessing other services, such as a local food bank, health services, childcare and life skills training programs.  The Give-a-Way project is one way in which the community can help by providing access to public transportation.

"At the heart of the Give-a-Way project is a desire to raise awareness about the challenges of women who live in poverty,” said Cathy Hill, Chair of United Way Women’s Legacy Council.  “The women of United Way Women’s Legacy Council are committed to creating opportunities for a better life for all.  We invest in quality programs, advocate for better policies, engage people in the community and generate resources.”  Hill is Vice President of Georgia Power’s Coastal Region.

Since its inception last year, United Way Women’s Legacy Council has distributed approximately 1,800 bus passes to women served through United Way programs and services.
