Savannah, GA (June 23, 2010) – Women’s Legacy Council, the local women’s giving circle launched by United Way of the Coastal Empire, raised over $9,000 in its second annual Give-a-Way project.  Funds raised will be used to provide bus passes for women served through United Way programs and services. 

For many low-income women in the community, transportation is one of the most significant barriers to finding and keeping employment and accessing other services, such as a local food bank, health services, childcare and life skills training programs.  Give-a-Way donations will be used to provide CAT bus passes for women who do not have a car or other means to reach the services they need.

Cathy Hill, Chair of United Way Women’s Legacy Council, thanked members of the group and encouraged them to continue their work in advocating on behalf of issues facing women in need at a Give-a-Way luncheon on June 18th, 2010 at the Savannah Technical College.  The luncheon was sponsored by Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation and featured a guest speaker, Dr. Kathy Love, President of Savannah Technical College, who is also a member of Women’s Legacy Council. 

“The Give-a-Way project is both celebration of an idea and affirmation of a cause,” states Women’s Legacy Chair Cathy Hill.  “Each of us has a hand in making a very tangible, significant change in women’s lives, right here in our community.  And that is tremendously exciting.”  Hill is Vice President of Georgia Power’s Coastal Region.

The Give-a-Way fundraising drive officially kicked off on Mother’s Day (May 9th, 2010) and culminated on Father’s Day (June 20th, 2010) with a goal of $5,400. Last year, United Way Women’s Legacy Council raised $1,800. 

United Way Women’s Legacy Council was founded in 2009 to bring local women leaders together to invest philanthropically in helping one another.  Growing from a founding group of 10 members to its current ranks of 55 local women, the giving circle members have each contributed $1,200 or more annually to United Way.
