United Way Honors Volunteers and Appoints New Members to the Board of Directors at Annual Meeting
SAVANNAH, GA (March 27, 2008) United Way of the Coastal Empire welcomed nearly 300 supporters to the 70th Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon held on Thursday, March 27, 2008 at the Armstrong Center. The program included the induction of new Board members and recognition of community volunteers for their hard work and dedication.
Outgoing Chairman of the Board, Dr. Thomas Jones, President of Armstrong Atlantic State University, shared highlights of the organization’s 2007 accomplishments and details of the investments made in our four county area. Dr. Jones recognized outgoing Board members and Committee Chairs and concluded his portion of the program by bestowing the role of United Way’s Chairman of the Board to Mike Kemp, Senior Vice President, Regional Trust Manager of Sea Island Bank.
Campaign Chair Bert Tenenbaum recognized Clear Channel, Savannah Morning News and WTOC-TV for their outstanding community support and a number of companies and organizations whose tremendous efforts helped United Way raise over $8 million in 2007 to support vital programs and initiatives that improve lives in Bryan, Chatham, Effingham and Liberty counties.
Dale Critz, Jr., President and General Manager of Critz, Inc., was introduced as the 2008 Campaign Chair and paid a touching tribute to the victims and families that were affected by the explosion at the Imperial Sugar Refinery. Critz reflected on the spirit of giving and acts of courage and kindness that have been demonstrated by so many individuals and businesses within the Coastal Empire.
United Way has been able to raise over $1 million dollars through the “Sugar Refinery Family Support Fund” to be used to help those affected by the disaster pay for medical supplies, utilities, mortgage or rent, food, transportation and other critical needs.
