Savannah, GA (March 18, 2008) United Way's Sugar Refinery Family Support Fund - created after the destruction caused by a massive explosion and fire at the Imperial Sugar refinery in Port Wentworth on Thursday, February 7th - continues to grow, reaching over $950,000.
The Fund is used to help those affected by the disaster pay for medical supplies, utilities, mortgage or rent, food, transportation and other critical needs.
The outpouring of community support to help victims and their families has been tremendous. Donations continue to arrive from as far away as Minnesota and South Dakota. The fund's latest boost came from Clear Channel Radio Benefit Concert Radio-thon, Georgia Ports Authority, Junior League of Savannah and Southern LNG.
United Way thanks all companies and the many individuals for their generous and thoughtful contributions to the Sugar Refinery Family Support Fund. 100% of contributions will go to assist employees and their families during this time of need.
United Way has set up a committee to review the process for providing payments from the fund to ensure the highest standards of accountability. Members of the committee include a representative from Imperial Sugar, Salvation Army, Red Cross, Colonial Oil, community volunteers and the United Way.
