Education & Youth Development

Helping children and youth achieve their potential.

Within United Way’s four-county service area 50% of school-aged children come from poverty. One in ten of our school-aged children display chronic absenteeism leading to poor academic performance, an increased likelihood of dropping out, and an increased involvement in risky behaviors. Only 80% of students in Bryan, Chatham, Effingham and Liberty counties graduate from high school on time with approximately 2,000 students dropping out of school each year.

United Way’s Education & Youth Development goal is to help all children and youth achieve their potential. We support programs that prepare children to start school ready to learn, help youth achieve academic success and graduate from high school on time, ready for college and the workforce. The programs provide supports to youth enabling them to successfully transition to adulthood and become contributing and productive members of the community.
