UWCE announces $8,777,007 campaign goal
Savannah, GA (September 6, 2012) – United Way of the Coastal Empire announced its highest ever campaign goal of $8,777,007 at its kick-off today at the Savannah Civic Center, with over 1,000 people in attendance to help mark the occasion. The amount represents a 6 percent increase over last year’s goal of $8,255,555.
During the annual campaign, funds are raised through workplace giving (payroll deduction), corporate gifts and individual donations. Funds raised from the annual campaign help support human service programs that improve the lives of people in Bryan, Chatham, Effingham and Liberty Counties. Priority funding goes to successful programs in the impact areas of Education & Youth Development, Economic Independence, Health & Wellness and Basic Human Needs. Last year, United Way funded over 120 human service programs, which represented 68 non-profit organizations in our four county service area.
This year, the campaign is led by Samuel G. McCachern, senior vice president of Thomas & Hutton.
“We set the bar high this year because the needs in our community are escalating: more than 60,000 people are living below poverty, and one in six residents are uninsured; where an estimated 35,000 kids are at risk of hunger, and more and more families and individuals are experiencing homelessness each year,” McCachern said. “I know we must try. United we can succeed.”
Recognized at the Kick-Off were volunteers who comprise the Campaign Cabinet, as well as the Loaned Associates who will carry the 2012 campaign message to employee groups, businesses and individuals across the community. “Raising $8,777,007 through United Way will take all of us, from every walk of life, pulling together to help one another,” McCachern said. “The United Way campaign is as basic, and important, as neighbors helping neighbors.”
During the luncheon, local businesses within the community reported results from their campaigns that were conducted in early August. These “Pacesetters” got a head start on their campaigns in order to set the bar for the community campaign as a whole. This year’s Pacesetters have helped to kick-off the campaign with $1,085,303 or 12 percent of this year’s goal.

To aid in this year’s effort, several generous sponsors and anonymous donors have donated prizes to be given away as part of the community campaign. Anyone attending a United Way event or campaign meeting at their place of employment is eligible to enter. United Way will periodically select the winner(s) beginning September 6th, 2012 through November 16th, 2012. No donation is required.
