1. Get to Know Your Community

Volunteering is a great way to “be on the ground” with your community and see first hand how organizations and yourself can make an impact without necessarily giving a monetary donation.

2. On Your Own Terms

There are so many ways to give back through volunteering your time, but also your resources. There is a variety of volunteering opportunities on that stretch beyond the idea of serving a meal or raking leaves. You can give whenever, however and wherever you feel most comfortable. Sharing resources like your knowledge or network connections is also a great way to volunteer and make a broader impact.

3. Team Building

Volunteering is a great way to spend time with like-minded people but from different backgrounds that you might not encounter in your own life. United Way Volunteers also works with groups like Young Leaders, students, and both major and local corporations. Blending experiences and expertise make a stronger local community.

4. Grow Your People Skills

By participating in volunteer efforts, you build upon skills like teamwork, interpersonal relationships and communications which can lead to personal growth. There are so many creative ways to get involved in the community besides labor intensive projects. Volunteering has a common thread with networking and can connect you to a new opportunity. It’s a great way to get your foot in the door!

5. Be A Leader

United Way is a volunteer-led organization that was originally started from local people realizing they could make a greater difference working together. We have a Board, fundraising cabinet, and several committees of experts that serve and forge the path for United Way to best improve the lives in our community. If you want to make a difference, volunteering in this or a similar capacity builds great leadership, and with that comes more ways to mobilize the caring power of our community.
